Beer has long been associated with a building a bigger belly. But now a new study suggests that drinking beer may help build better bones due to its high silicon content.

Dietary silicon might be important for the growth and development of bones and their connective tissue. And it may reduce the risk of osteoporosis, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Researchers say the silicon content of beer has never been thoroughly studied until now. The findings reveal that beer provides a significant source of silicon.

There’s not a recommended daily intake for silicon. But researchers say the average daily consumption of two liters of beer, would satisfy the requirement. In some cases, a liter of beer might suffice.

So if you’re heading to the Atlanta Brewing Company make sure you order the right beer for your bones. Since, not all beers are created equal. Beers with high levels of malted barley and hops are richest in silicon. The results showed the India Pale Ale category of beers tends to have more silicon, according to the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture.

If you’re not a beer drinker, there are other ways to get your silicon, including granola, high-fiber wheat bran cereal, oatmeal, and dates.
